Meet Jess and Ashley, the instructors that will be leading this amazing Broadreach program this summer! With their breadth of expertise and dedication to helping students discover the world and their place in it, they are thrilled to embark on this journey and summer of unforgettable experiences.
Jess grew up on San Juan Island, in Washington state. From 6th Grade on, Jess attended Spring Street International School, a school that prioritized experiential education. Subjects were often taught in conjunction with field trips, workshops, or community service. International travel was a core part of the high school curriculum and included places like Belize, Mexico, Thailand and India. After graduating, she attended college in Wisconsin where she decided to explore her dad's side of the family by doing a year of exchange in New Zealand. She fell in love with the country that she never quite managed to leave! She finished her undergraduate degree in biology at Victoria University in Wellington and then went on to study veterinary science at Massey University. Jess is currently a small animal veterinarian in Wellington, and loves every minute of it. When she is not working in the clinic, she enjoys volunteering, specifically working to support communities that do not have regular access to veterinary services, in order to improve animal welfare and community health. Thus far she has worked in Samoa, Niue and India. It is her hope to develop strategies that assist communities in becoming independent of any one vet or program, by providing education as well as services, and by encouraging the younger generation. If she has a second of free time she loves to travel, read, kayak, and tramp (New Zealand hiking). She grew up riding horses, and also enjoys dry-land dog mushing and circus sports such as acro-balance and silks! Jess is thrilled to be joining Broadreach this summer on the Costa Rica Veterinary experience and hopes her students will come away with the same passion for animals and community service that was fostered in her!
Ashley grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina and is a student at Western Carolina University where she is majoring in Parks and Recreation Management and Spanish. Hailing from a state with mountains and coastline, Ashley’s outdoor experience includes hiking, backpacking, camping and canoeing. A seasoned traveler, she has visited countries in Africa, Europe, Central America and most recently studied abroad in Costa Rica for 3 months. She has experience working with large groups as a campground activity director and soccer and running coach. Whether she’s hiking up a mountain, skiing down the slope, bungee jumping in the cloud forest or taking a weekend road trip to explore a new city, Ashley has a true passion for outdoor adventure. If she’s not outside, you will find her reading or listening to a new podcast series. She loves to learn and is always seeking opportunities to do just that. She looks forward to sharing her love of Costa Rica and its culture with her students this summer!
