Bonaire: Scuba

Nursing our babies (corals)

Tuesday, June 21, 2022

We tried to wake up at 6:30, but we ended up getting up at about 7. We all went straight to a coral restoration site and watched a presentation about the coral restoration effort in Bonaire. After learning about the coral restoration projects, we went on our first and only dive of the day to one of the restoration sites, where we helped clean the coral nurseries. They were growing the coral on "trees" that were floating in the water, and when they got big enough they were re-planted at a reef. We needed to brush the algae off of the coral growing trees and make sure the wires that held the coral were clean so the algae didn't grow down onto the coral. We spent the rest of the day studying rescue diving and talking about emergency situations. We watched a video about the whole course, and in all- studying occupied most of the day. We introduced the new people to the house who had missed their first flight, and had our first dinner with all of us together. It was a fun and relaxing day!
