Fiji: Shark Studies

Meet Your Instructors!

Wednesday, June 8, 2022

Summer is finally here and we are so excited to meet you in just a few days! We have been looking forward to going to Fiji and sharing the beautiful Fijian culture with you all. We are most excited to spend our days learning about sharks and interacting with them FACE-TO-FACE! We may be more excited than our students, because we are huge fan of sharks! It's going to be so fun experiencing them with our new students.

In addition to all the shark friends we are going to make, we can't wait to explore Fijian culture, serve the community, and go on some amazing land adventures as well. Get prepared for the summer of your life, and learn more about us below!

Mary Grace (MG) Duethman (She/Her/Hers)
MG is excited to return to Broadreach this summer as a marine biology instructor! Raised in Kansas City and now living in northern California, MG’s passion for animals and the environment led her to become a marine biologist. After earning her bachelor’s in marine science and biology from the University of Tampa, she went on to complete a master’s in ecology and environmental biology in Glasgow, Scotland. Fiji will be MG's 29th country, and she has extensive field experience in places like South Africa, Egypt, and the Caribbean. When she’s not studying or exploring a new country, MG enjoys hiking, scuba diving, and going to the beach with her dog, Pepper. She is thrilled to explore Fiji (and the sharks!) with her Broadreach students this summer, and can’t wait to be a part of what she knows will be an amazing marine adventure!

Saskia Charles (She/Her/Hers)
Saskia is looking forward to another amazing summer as a Broadreach instructor, this time in Fiji! When she’s not spending her summer with us, Saskia teaches scuba diving in places like Cozumel and Curacao, working with children and adults from many different countries. In college, she studied abroad in Madrid, which sparked her love of travel. While there, she spent time in Budapest, Mallorca, France, and Italy. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 2020, Saskia moved to Cozumel, Mexico, to become a divemaster. This is where she learned about her love for teaching and pursued her instructor certification. Saskia is passionate about sustainability, and has worked in legislation and donor development at Seaside Sustainability, a non-profit based in Massachusetts focused on marine conservation. When she has spare time, she loves to work out, bake, watch movies, spend time outside, learn new things, and travel. She is looking forward to meeting all of her students and hopes to instill in them a sense of duty to protect the fragile marine ecosystem.
